About the role
The primary responsibilities of this role are the physical and chemical testing of pulp and paper mill samples for the purposes of process monitoring and control and final product quality control in the 24-hour laboratory. In addition, this position is responsible for supervision of the transfer of bulk chemicals delivered to the mill which involves their safe unloading from a delivery tanker into storage tanks used in the manufacturing processes.
When not providing occasional shift relief, the technician will carry out testing of woodchips and/or support of laboratory day crew tasks, chemical area inspections, housekeeping, and online analyser support in the form of chemical preparation and verification testing as directed by the Laboratory Supervisor. The technician’s time will be allocated evenly between woodyard testing and sampling and support of day crew laboratory operations.
What you will do
Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Safety conformance - conducts the required pre-checks for equipment prior to the commencement of any test.
- Environmental conformance - correct disposal of laboratory waste as per VISY policies and procedures.
- Quality - ensure accurate testing of various quality characteristics for all in-process samples for correct process optimization.
- Productivity - handle unloading of bulk chemical deliveries and carry out paper testing with speed and accuracy in order not to cause delays in the winding operations.
- Cost - minimize retest (chemical cost), breakages (materials cost), and damage to major instruments or equipment.
What you will bring to the team
- Year-12 or equivalent. Certified true copy of certificate is required.
- Chemistry or Science Graduate - would be advantageous
- Experience in any manufacturing environment
- Laboratory experience
- Highly motivated with demonstrated good work attitude and behaviour.
- A good team player.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to work under pressure with sound decision-making skills.
- Ability to work with computerised control systems and Microsoft office suite.
- Ability to respond to challenges as they arise.
- Service and results orientated.
- Satisfactory housekeeping skills.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of company policies (Quality, Health & Safety, Environment).
- Sound verbal and written communication skills.
- Sound numerical skills with attention to detail.
